Our policies will cut the average household bill by around £150, and we expect this to contribute to a lower Price Cap in April. Actual savings will vary by household, depending on energy use; those with higher electricity consumption could save more than £150. ... See MoreSee Less

The Help to Save scheme, originally due to close in 2027, will now be made permanent and extended to parents and carers on Universal Credit from 2028.
Described by Martin Lewis as “unbeatable,” the scheme lets eligible savers put away up to £2,400 over four years, with a £1,200 government bonus added on top — helping families build up savings and a financial cushion for emergencies like a broken boiler.
From 2028, the scheme will be opened up to an additional 1.5 million people, including Universal Credit claimants with children in education and carers who provide at least 35 hours of care each week, offering extra support with the cost of living. ... See MoreSee Less

All care leavers will automatically qualify for full student loan support, a step that helps level the playing field for those who have faced the toughest starts in life.
This change removes a major barrier to education and opportunity for young people leaving care, giving them access to the maximum maintenance loan, worth up to £13,500.
Currently, only 14% of care leavers go on to university, compared to 50% of their peers, and they are far more likely to drop out, often due to financial challenges.
This new support builds on the government’s commitment to ensure disadvantaged students are not priced out of higher education, as highlighted in the recent Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper. ... See MoreSee Less

We’re accelerating efforts to cut waiting lists by investing millions in upgraded technology across the NHS, boosting productivity so nurses and doctors can spend more time caring for patients and helping people get treated faster.
A £300 million capital investment will fund new digital tools for NHS staff, reducing admin through automation, giving quicker access to patient information, improving communication, and ensuring more coordinated care.
This means nurses, physios, doctors, and other staff can focus more on patients and less on paperwork.
Reaching 2% productivity growth could free up £17 billion over the next three years, which will be reinvested back into the NHS in England to improve patient care. ... See MoreSee Less

Every secondary school in England will benefit from a £5 million boost to help provide more books.
This funding comes at a critical time, as reading for pleasure among young people has dropped sharply, with the number of 8- to 18-year-olds who enjoy reading in their free time falling by a third since 2019.
The plans support the government’s National Year of Reading 2026, which aims to bring together parents, schools, and communities to encourage young people to put down their phones and pick up a book, a habit shown to improve writing skills, build confidence, and even enhance future earning potential. ... *Update* as I wanted to check back on the chancellor’s speech.
13 million pensioners are set to see their State Pension increase faster than inflation next April thanks to the Government’s commitment to the Triple Lock.
This is an increase worth up to £550 a year, an extra £120 compared to what it would have been if it had been uprated only by inflation. The full basic State Pension is expected to rise by around an extra £440 a year.
The Chancellor confirmed that
‘We are ensuring that people only in receipt of the basic or new State Pension do not have to pay small amounts of tax through simple assessment from April 2027’

The Chancellor has confirmed that NHS single prescription charges will stay frozen next year at £9.90.
The cost of 3-month and annual prepayment certificates will also remain frozen for 2026/27, keeping regular prescriptions more affordable.
Don’t forget, support is also available through the NHS Low Income Scheme, which can help with prescription costs. Many people, including eligible pensioners, students, benefit recipients and those living in care homes, can receive free prescriptions.
