Some initial thoughts on the Pathways to Work Green Paper which I will update with further information as the consultation progresses. Currently, many who want to get into work simply cannot because the system does not support them.
This Government is determined to build a fairer system that provides vital support for those who need it most, ensuring they can live with dignity and independence. We will also ensure that everyone who can work is supported to do so. 300,000 people with work-limiting conditions leave their jobs every year because of a lack of support.
I am pleased that the Government is investing an additional £1 billion each year for work, health, and skills support through a “Pathways to Work” programme. This represents one of the largest investments to enhance opportunities for sick and disabled people. This is alongside rebalancing Universal Credit, increasing the standard allowance above inflation for the first time. This will result in a £775 cash increase per year by 2029/30 for both existing and new claimants.
As part of the consultation, we also propose an additional premium for new claimants with the most severe, life-long health conditions who have no prospect of improvement and will never be able to work.
Many find the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) a challenging process, dividing claimants into those who can and can’t work. In reality, health conditions for many people can fluctuate, and with the right reasonable adjustments, many could continue to work. That is why we are scrapping the WCA from 2028/29. In the meantime, we will shift the balance towards face-to-face reassessments whilst looking to switch reassessments off for good for those who will never be able to work. Removing anxiety and worry for those with the most debilitating conditions.
What is clear after speaking to many people with fluctuating conditions is that they fear losing their financial security when they return to work. This Government will introduce a ‘right to try’, by legislating to guarantee that work will never lead to someone being called for a reassessment.
I appreciate that some people might be feeling worried or anxious about their current circumstances. I want to be clear that no changes are taking place immediately and my office will continue to support people struggling to access the welfare system. However, I will continue to seek clarity regarding the changes to PIP eligibility criteria and how these reforms will impact people in North West Leicestershire.
I would encourage anyone to engage with the consultation here and I will continue to scrutinise the process with colleagues as part of my role on the Work and Pensions Select Committee :https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/pathways-to-work-reforming-benefits-and-support-to-get-britain-working-green-paper

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend a Leicestershire Resilience Forum test exercise to observe ghe response of all our Emergency Services to a major incident on the M1.
I wanted to pay tribute to our first responders in the house following this exercise and the amazing work they do to keep us all safe.

It’s welcome news that Diseworth, Long Whatton and Breedon will see new money towards their alleviation schemes to protect properties into the future.
I will continue to raise other schemes and affected areas with the Flooding Minister Emma Hardy, to ensure that our communities are as protected as possible for the future.
